If you feel like you’re ready to take the plunge to move out and start a new chapter of independence, keep reading this post to learn about the 4 life lessons you’ll learn when you move out on your own.

1. Managing your finances.

The most important lesson you’ll learn when you move out on your own is how to manage your finances and prioritize your spending.

If you want to save up enough money to put a down payment on a house, retirement fund, or something else, you’ll need to learn how to budget your money.

Expenses (rent, groceries, utilities) will add up pretty quickly if you’re living on your own. Stressing about money on top of everyday stresses won’t do you any good.

Making sure you’re smart about your money will help with all the stress. There will be things you need to stop spending money on to save. Once you learn that and start budgeting, you’ll be good to go!

2. Keeping up with housework.

Did your mom always nag about doing certain things like doing the dishes or keeping your room clean? You’re not going to have this reminder when you move out on your own.

We all can feel lazy sometimes, but it’s not a good habit to keep. When I come home from work, I usually just want to sit on the couch and relax.

I would skip the laundry, dishes, vacuuming, etc. Eventually, it all piles up. The more it piles up, the lazier you become.

Clutter is a distraction. Decluttering your home or workspace is an easy way to increase your productivity. It is so much easier to focus on the task at hand when your environment is tidy. Less stuff crowding up your space = less time cleaning.

3. Learn how to cook.

Learning how to cook when you move out on your own is definitely going to be a necessity. Remember what we said about managing finances? Ordering DoorDash is not always going to be an option!

If you don’t have a lot of experience cooking, you can always find easy-to-follow recipes on Pinterest. Pinterest is the perfect place to find food inspiration.

You can always sign up for Gobble if you’re looking for cheap, healthy meals. Their meals are table-ready in 15 minutes, including prep time, and they have new recipes weekly. You can choose from a classic dinner, a lean & clean dinner, and a vegetarian dinner.

4. Learning to be independent.

Once you move out on your own, you will have to learn to be independent. This also includes being a responsible adult on a daily basis.

And don’t forget that it’s also okay to feel lonely. If you’re used to living with roommates or your parents, it can be a new feeling when you move out on your own. It’s also nice to come home every night to your own safe haven and focus on yourself and have “me-time”.

When you move out on your own, you will have to learn to be independent. Your 20s are the perfect time to learn to be self-sufficient.
