Underrated Shows That Deserve More Hype
Let’s be honest, we’ve all spent way too much time scrolling through streaming platforms, trying to find something — anything — to watch. Chances are, you’ve already watched all the big names: Stranger Things, Bridgerton, The Crown, Squid Game. However, what about the little guys? The hidden gems? The underrated shows that deserve more hype that somehow slipped through the cracks?
Today, I’m sharing a few shows that deserve way more love. If you’re looking for your next TV obsession, you might just find it here.
1. The OA (Netflix)
Ultimately, it’s a haunting, emotional, and totally unique story about a missing blind woman who returns with her sight and, more importantly, a wild tale to tell. On the surface, it’s part sci-fi; beneath that, it’s a spiritual journey—and overall, it’s 100% thought-provoking.Canceled too soon, but totally worth the ride.
2. Lodge 49 (Hulu)
Think modern-day philosophy meets chill surfer vibes. For example, in this quirky show, we follow a down-on-his-luck ex-surfer who, quite unexpectedly, stumbles into a mysterious fraternal lodge. As a result, his life takes an unexpected turn. It’s strange in the best way; however, it also has a heart of gold.
3. PEN15 (Hulu)
If middle school was a fever dream of awkwardness, this hilarious and painfully relatable show nails it. The twist? Adult women play their 13-year-old selves—braces, boy bands, AIM chats and all.
4. Please Like Me (Hulu/Prime Video)
Australian humor effortlessly meets real emotional depth. In fact, this semi-autobiographical series not only tackles mental health but also explores relationships and growing up—with both humor and heart. You’ll laugh, cry, and probably text your best friend afterward.
5. The Leftovers (HBO)
It’s intense, mysterious, and deeply emotional. What happens when 2 percent of the world’s population just vanishes? This isn’t your typical post-apocalyptic story; rather, it’s a beautiful meditation on grief, faith, and what it means to move forward.
6. Detectorists (Prime Video)
A British gem about two metal-detecting hobbyists searching for buried treasure, and maybe a little meaning, too. At first glance, it might seem simple, but in reality, it’s quiet, dry, and incredibly charming. In many ways, it feels like a cup of tea for your soul.
7. Dark (Netflix)
Okay, some people know about this one, but not enough. This German sci-fi thriller is a time-travel masterpiece. Complex, mind-bending, and addictive—don’t let the subtitles stop you!
Why These Shows Matter
What makes these shows stand out? For starters, they take risks. In addition, they tell weird, original stories. Instead of chasing trends, they’re doing their own thing. And in a sea of endless content, that’s something worth celebrating.
Final Thoughts
So, the next time you’re doom-scrolling through your streaming queue, consider giving one of these underrated shows a shot—you might be pleasantly surprised. You might find your new favorite, and bonus points—you get to be the friend who says “I told you so” when it finally blows up.
